Iran and Hormuz oil disruption

Read by Africa, Middle East and Asia

How press across Africa, the Middle East and Asia covers Iran's role in oil problems around the Strait of Hormuz.

Africa, Middle East and Asia on oil supply problems and shipping disruption in the Strait of Hormuz

Hormuz oil flows near pre-war levels despite Iran's closure, while Iran's own exports hit zero

The sharpest point in this window is not anger at Iran. It is a data-driven story, mostly relayed from BBC Verify, AFP-style copy and Kpler: Iran's grip on Hormuz is weakening while its own oil stays blockaded. Most other coverage is flat wire copy about unattributed tanker strikes and Iran's "seven conditions." Only Thairath's BBC rewrite blames Iran directly. Only Legit.ng Hausa cheers it. Thairath, rewriting BBC, gives the most damning account of Iran. It says the June deal 'collapsed within a few weeks after Iran resumed attacking cargo ships.' It says Iran 'has targeted ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz that avoid using Iranian waters.' It reports Iran's mine claim but sets it against a Saudi rebuttal that a Saudi supertanker was hit in an Iranian attack, killing two Filipino crew. It also cites an IMO count of 22 crew dead in 79 attacks.

This is the only piece that puts the blame for the deal's collapse, and for dead seafarers, on Iran. It reached the readers of Thailand's best-selling popular daily. It is still BBC wire copy, not Thairath's own view. Thairath, 15 Sep

Legit.ng Hausa openly backs Tehran. Its own subhead reads 'Iran has exposed America's lies.' It relays IRGC claims that Trump lies about nuclear weapons and that the US 'has failed in the military war.'

It is the only clearly pro-Iran voice in the set, aimed at a mass Hausa-speaking audience in northern Nigeria. The facts come from the Times of Israel, but the cheerleading framing is the outlet's own. Legit.ng Hausa, 4 Oct

Shafaq News, relaying BBC Verify, reports Gulf oil flows back at 92% of pre-war levels. It credits US escorts, shuttle tankers and pipelines. It also says Iranian exports 'stopped completely' under the US blockade, and that September saw 'the largest number of successful Iranian attacks on commercial ships since March.'

This is the core of the 'Iran's leverage is shrinking' story: the world is routing around Iran while Iran stays cut off. It also records that Iran is escalating attacks, not easing them. Shafaq News (شفق نيوز), 3 Oct
