Pacific on the New Zealand general election

None of these four Pacific outlets covered the New Zealand election, and none is angry at New Zealand. The only critical material is AFP wire copy in Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes about the Luxon government's climate rollbacks.

Not one article in the window is about the election itself. In their own reporting, Radio 1 Tahiti and Tatoli present New Zealand warmly, as a neighbour that helps out. The criticism comes from AFP copy reprinted in Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes, not from the paper's own voice. That copy covers climate targets slipping and a new law that blocks climate lawsuits. 1. French Polynesia Tahiti Infos Nothing on this
  2. French Polynesia Radio 1 Tahiti 1/10 at its hottest, 3 pieces
  3. New Caledonia Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes 2/10 at its hottest, 4 pieces
  4. Timor-Leste Tatoli 0/10 at its hottest, 1 piece

Heat is how angry or contemptuous a piece is towards New Zealand, scored 0 to 10 when it is translated. Warm coverage scores low. Hatched outlets ran nothing relevant; cross-hatched ones we can only partly see, because their feed only holds recent items.

The loud ones

  1. 2

Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes ran AFP copy on a 67–53 vote that passed a law shutting down climate lawsuits against companies. The law ends Māori activist Michael Smith's case. The copy quotes Smith calling it a "dark day for democracy" and a Green MP calling it "intentionally against the public interest".

This is the sharpest language about New Zealand in the whole set. It reached New Caledonian readers, but it is wire copy quoting New Zealand critics, not the paper's own view. Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes, 19 Aug

  2. 2

The same paper relayed AFP's report on the independent Climate Change Commission's findings. The report says the "right-wing government ignored the recommendations" and warns that "there is now little time left to correct course". It names the exclusion of agriculture from emissions pricing, rollbacks on clean vehicles and an LNG import terminal.

It frames Wellington as falling behind on climate, which matters to Pacific readers. But it is agency copy and carries no editorial anger of its own. Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes, 22 Jul

  3. 1

Radio 1 Tahiti presents New Zealand as a nearer, more practical place than Paris to send medical evacuations: "Four to four and a half hours' flight versus a minimum of 22 hours". Today 80% of evacuated patients go to mainland France.

This is mildly notable. A French Polynesian newsroom openly makes the case for leaning toward Auckland rather than Paris for healthcare. The tone is favourable to New Zealand, not hostile. Radio 1 Tahiti, 1 Sep

Recurring threads

Election: silence

There are no articles on the general election from Radio 1 Tahiti, Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes or Tatoli. Tahiti Infos had nothing relevant at all. The nearest thing to coalition politics is one line of AFP copy: National's partners ACT and NZ First oppose the bill to ban social media for under-16s, so it may not pass. Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes, 24 Aug

Climate rollbacks (wire copy only)

Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes twice reprinted AFP stories critical of the government's climate record. One covers the Commission's warning, the other the law blocking climate lawsuits. The paper added no commentary of its own. Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes, 22 JulLes Nouvelles Calédoniennes, 19 Aug

New Zealand as a helpful neighbour

In their own reporting, Radio 1 Tahiti and Tatoli treat New Zealand as a partner. The examples are medical evacuations and doctor exchanges, community grants of up to NZ$50,000 from the Consulate Fund, and the ambassador offering artefacts and technical help for the INTERFET memorial in Dili. Radio 1 Tahiti, 1 SepRadio 1 Tahiti, 22 JulTatoli, 22 Sep

Biosecurity

Both New Caledonian sources reported H5N1 bird flu detections in New Zealand wild birds in a neutral, precautionary way. They treat New Zealand as a regional reference point for testing and surveillance, not as a problem. Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes, 16 JulRadio 1 Tahiti, 21 Jul

What it says about them

Coverage that reveals more about the source country’s own preoccupations than about New Zealand. This is a separate pass, told to apply the same standard to every outlet, but the model judging it was trained mostly on Western, English-language text.

Radio 1 Tahiti low confidence

The article covers a visit by a New Zealand medical delegation, but the angle is almost entirely Polynesian: it compares New Zealand with mainland France. It sets a flight of about 4 to 4.5 hours against at least 22 hours, cites the 80%/20% split of medical evacuations between France and New Zealand, and says New Zealand is 'closer than Paris'. New Zealand mostly serves as the alternative to Paris.

French Polynesia's own concern about depending on a far-away mainland France for specialist care, and its interest in looking to its region (Auckland) rather than to Paris. This is a legitimate local angle, not distortion or point-scoring. It counts as a mirror only in a mild sense: the New Zealand story is told through Polynesia's relationship with France. A tabloid or state outlet framing a neighbour around its own domestic dependency would be judged the same way. Radio 1 Tahiti, 1 Sep

The set has eight articles and none is on the election. Four of the eight are AFP wire copy reprinted by Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes, including both of the critical pieces. The outlets' own reporting is limited to friendly, low-heat pieces from Radio 1 Tahiti and Tatoli. Everything above is an AI model’s reading of the articles below. Treat it as a lead, not a verdict.

Radio 1 reports that Tahiti's main hospital (CHPF) is working with a visiting New Zealand medical delegation to revive and expand medical evacuations and skills-sharing, presenting New Zealand as a nearer, more practical but somewhat costlier alternative to mainland France.

La Nouvelle-Zélande adopte une loi protégeant les entreprises des procès climatiques

AFP-based report that New Zealand's right-wing government passed, 67 to 53, a law blocking climate lawsuits against companies, ending Māori activist Michael Smith's case against six firms. It sets critics' charges of harm to democracy against the government's claim of legal certainty.
